Ways in Which Media Can Affect Society

Effect 1:  the effect of violent video games (media) on society

In most of todays video games, there is an extreme amount of violence encountered in them. The violence has grown from very unrealistic shows to games where the violence is realistic, and give young children exposure to explicit things they should not be exposed with at that early age. This violent video games can influence the young children or teen agers in such way that they can change their perspective of life and make them take incorrect decisions they think are correct.

As seen in this article, the US supreme court has done an attempt to restrict sales of violent video games to minors, by imposing a rate: mature, teen and everyone. Children under 17 are unable to buy mature games unless accompanied by a parent.

Effect 2: media affects language development

Specially in children, media, specially social media, affects their language development since social media sites like for example face book and twitter introduces them to various abbreviations like for example "LOL" and TTYL" which they apply in real life while speaking and writing, regardless of the informality or formality of the speech or writing piece.

Effect 3: Media imposes fashion styles

Through media, various fashion styles have been created. Singers and artist post their music in internet or show them in television, and the audience is influenced by their style, ranging from movement to fashion. Now a days, some people in society have been influenced by a new fashion style called "hipster". You can clearly see that these artists have drastically affected society by making them utilize their strange, different, unusual fashion

Media Effects Introduction

What is Media?

From my understanding and knowledge, media is a tool utilized to transmit information and mass communication to a large audience or market. Throughout history, the source where media is transmitted from has changed. Now a days, the main sources of media transmission are television, radio, magazine, newspaper and the biggest of them all: Internet. These mass media transmitters play a big role in the daily lives of society

How does Media affect Our (society):

Awareness and Knowledge

Media in general gives us a perception of different cultures, religions and diversity. This makes the average person have a view on other people from different cultures, therefore creating stereotypes. Media creates stereotypes because they gives generalized traits to individuals from different cultures. For example, media portraits most middle eastern Arabs as terrorists and killers. Besides knowledge about religion and culture, media also informs us about what is happening in the globe, and various current events which maintain us aware of the political, social and economical state of the whole world.

Attitude and Behavior

Regarding attitude and behavior, media has a great effect how society behaves and acts. For example, television displays shows about love, fashion, relationship, violence, etc. A high percentage of teenagers around the world watch these shows and these shows teach specific values that change the behavior and attitude and manner of thinking of these teenagers that are influenced by this form of media. Regarding our behavior, besides influencing the way we act, media also affects the way we talk and communicate, meaning it teaches us certain phrases or ways of saying things. This mostly happen in latin american countries, were media made the people utilize english words in their vocabulary  like for example "jeans" or "boom".
